Well, it seems that my tutors either have not had time to visit the LAMP Blog, or have not figured out how to use it! Just FYI, when you post a comment, under "comment as" select anonymous. This will allow everyone to post without limiting email accounts to only those listed from the selection. You have the option to identify yourself (that would be nice) or remain anonymous. Either way, it would be helpful if you just posted monthly..
Would like to thank Norma and Jose and the rest of the staff for making the LAMP program possible. I am a new tutor this year so I don't have a lot of experience but I hope I am learning a lot about how to do the job. We are progressing and having slow but steady success. The learner I am working with has expressed his wish that progress would be faster. He would like very much to read at a higher level as he sees others enjoying their reading at the library. He studies religiously and continues to make progress so I believe we are on the right track.
I find that the students participating in this program are very appreciative and highly motivated. That makes me more motivated to help them and keep my commitment. I'm learning from them, and I try to learn more to help them. I'm using the computer more to locate information to present to my class and students I tutor. We're all growing and learning together!
To Patrick Scanlan, Hi Patrick and thank you for being our first tutor to post in our blog! If I may make a suggestion on how to assist your learner in gaining fluency pace; using audio tapes to record his reading and having them played back to him is one great way to make some gains. An audio playback allows for the learner to listen to his reading successes or revise urgent needs that need more prioritizing. Audio tapes are also a good way to help support how he sounds, and areas where clear communication is essential.
Hi all, I'm partly doing this to see if it actually works for me. I also have an ulterior motive; I have found some material on the internet and the office is kind enough to print copies for my class. You are welcome to help yourselves to anything you find useful. If you have found anything that might be useful to my class, I would appreciate hearing about it. thanks, Bob ps If you don't get this letter, please let me know
Congratulations to Diane Mills, the recipient of this year's Havey Elparin Tutor of the Year Award! Please join me in congratulating Diane for her outstanding dedication to her learers and to the LAMP Program. Diane received this award at the Tutor Recognition Event on August 8, 2009.
For those who did not make it to this wonderful event, you may want to view it on Channel 55.
Our program has gained recognition across the United States recently due to our "Walk a thon" and "Why I Teach English" video tape on UTube. LAMP has received calls from as far as Wisconsin to congratulate us and most recently, the HISTORY CHANNEL has selected our program to do a documentary on the migration of immigrants into our City and literacy program! All this could not have been accomplished without the dedication and support from all you!
Since 1984, Literacy for All of Monterey Park (LAMP) has been a leader in adult and family literacy programs. We improve human lives by providing high-quality, learner-centered literacy services to the San Gabriel Valley at no cost.
